Yesterday I wrote about an Air Powered car, and based on the, uh, popularity of that post (which I will address in due course), here’s another type of vehicle that uses air to increase fuel efficiency. The new tech under the hood is called Fuel Vapor, and it’s able to increase the fuel efficiency of any gas engine by up to 20% while at the same time decreasing CO2 emissions by 30%, all without a catalytic converter. This is all apparently made possible by mixing air with fuel at a ratio of 20:1, as opposed to 14.7:1, which is standard for most cars.
Although the Fuel Vapor system can be installed on any gas engine, it’s flagship platform, the alÃ© (that would be “allay,” not “ale”), is no slouch. The alÃ© has a 180hp Honda engine and can accelerate from 0 to 60 in 5 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 140 mph. It corners at 1.7g on street tires, and at 92 mpg, can drive from Canada so San Francisco without refueling. Furthermore, it emits 75% less CO2 than your average hybrid. The initial run of these cars will be hand built and cost $75,000 (Canadian), with mass production predicted to bring the price down to less than half that in 5 years. Now, Fuel Vapor technology doesn’t approach the levels of cleanliness and efficiency that the Air Car claims to, but the upside is (and it’s a big upside due to sheer convenience) that it runs on normal gasoline and you can refuel it anywhere. As such, it’s certainly no solution to our oil dependency, but it’s a step in a positive (if perhaps not ultimately the best) direction.
So then, what’s the best direction? In my opinion, we’re shooting for safe, zero emissions vehicles, driven by energy from renewable sources. I am immensely in favor of this, and indeed, in favor of any steps (however small) in this direction. That being said, I think it’s important that each step taken is carefully thought out, and in our current media saturated (read: media biased) world, the consumer has to do a lot of that analysis on their own. The Air Car, for example, is undeniably a very environmentally friendly vehicle in that it runs on air, producing zero emissions. But at the same time, it raises questions that both the media (since environmentalism is so popular) and the manufacturer (for obvious reasons) seem reluctant to directly address… For example, where is the power to compress the air coming from, and how environmentally friendly is that? From a more general perspective, do we want to try and centralize our power production for maximum efficiency, even if it means depending more heavily on an aging and overworked power grid? Or would we rather decentralize into smaller regional or even personal means of renewable power production, even if they are significantly more expensive and potentially less reliable?
Questions like these are just the tip of the iceberg, and I don’t mean to try and answer them myself (don’t worry). The point I am attempting to make (and that perhaps I failed to make clearly in a certain previous post) is that these are complicated issues, and it’s far too easy to just say “wow, a car that runs on air!” and leave it at that (which is what mainstream media tends to do). There are no easy answers, and there may not even be “correct” answers, but companies like FuelVapor and MDI are making substantial progress in a positive direction and deserve not only superficial publicity, but also well thought out and carefully reasoned support.

Most Garmin auto/mobile GPS units come highly recommended by reviewers. This unit for the most part satisfies. It has been accurate and trouble free in finding and giving directions, not so with other features. Now for the downside. Either the paid renewable subscription type or free traffic updates feature available on many GPS units is a joke. For the most part they are inaccurate and not current and do not give you real time road construction alerts. The next item is the cost of map updates after the first year. Garmin asks for $100.00 I believe. This to me is a little steep considering that the actual cost to Garmin and other providers is most likely a fraction of that. Ah yes marketing. A way to sell more new new units. I will be investigating manufacturers that offer real time traffic reports for a fixed monthly to yearly charge for what I hope is a superior service for not much more than a map update. Since they down sized from the Street Pilot line, the sound stinks. All for looks. The microphone reception in Bluetooth mode is also terrible. Most times you cannot make out what the Bluetooth user is saying.

Also, once you accumulate some floss on the cone by holding it vertically, turn the cone horizontally to collect the rest. The higher you hold the cone and twist, the fluffier the ball of cotton candy will be. It just takes a little practice. The Nostalgia Electrics Ccm505 Cotton Candy Maker came with a small bag of strawberry vanilla floss sugar and I also purchased a couple boxes of flavored floss sugar at another web store. The floss sugar works great. The instructions say you can use regular table sugar if desired and it can be flavored with sweetened kool-aid powder. We haven't tried this yet.

BusinessWeek and the IDSA's International Design Excellence Awards remind us why we love ID so; the sheer breadth of products, not to mention the quality, encapsulated in this year's awards have something to wow even the most jaded design-head.

"This year's IDEA were judged during a scalding hot few days in May," says Helen Walters BusinessWeek's Innovation & Design Editor. "Despite the searing heat, jury members remained remarkably even-tempered, even when brawling over whether something was worthy of a gold, silver or bronze award. The judges immersed themselves in these projects, really getting to grips with the story behind each design. So while not every award was unanimous, each one was certainly agonized over."

Nissan said it plans to offer the Leaf at an affordable price, though it hasn't disclosed what that will be.

Nissan's commitment to electric cars, an initiative it first detailed in June, significantly increases the industry's stakes in developing an economically viable battery-powered vehicle. General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC are also developing their own versions.

Nissan in June was granted $1.6 billion in loans by the U.S. Department of Energy and said it plans to use the funds to build the capacity to make more than 100,000 electric cars a year at its plant in Smyrna, Tenn., by 2013.

Nissan also continues to improve internal-combustion engines to use in hybrids and diesel-engine vehicles, Mr. Ghosn said. Electric cars are likely to account for just 10% of overall global vehicles by 2020, which means the rest will remain powered by conventional engines, he said.

First, it just passed through the FCC thus confirming the model number on this oddball Black Label-series handset with what appears to be a 21:9 aspect ratio. And the fact that it's now FCC tested is also indicative that we're nearing launch with 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth, FM transmitter, and 1000mAh Li-Ion battery confirmed within. Unfortunately, testing was limited to GSM 850/1900 and the device is repeatedly referred to as a GSM/EDGE phone -- in other words, no 3G. However, while most of the documents are withheld from public viewing at the request of LG, this particularly revealing exchange with the test lab was not:

Test lab: "While the licensed transmitter's Operational Description, for the most part, lists only non- U.S. bands for WCDMA, p.7/12 states that 'this design guideline shows UMTS 2100, UMTS1900 and UMTS850 applications.' Please clarify."

LG: "The main chipset supports GSM850/GSM1900/UMTS850/UMTS1900 but BL40 supports GSM850 & GSM1900."

Of course, UMTS850/1900 are the standard 3G bands used by AT&T in North America which makes this all the more perplexing. See the relevant screen-grab after the break.

Update: It just occurred to us what might be happening. Those 3G bands will be enabled when the LG BL40 launches on Telus' new HSPA network in Canada as its first GSM device. Hey, it's just a hunch but it certainly makes sense.

Toshiba Japan announced a new portable DVD player today [JP], the SD-P93DTW, which is equipped with a One-Seg digital TV tuner. The device is Japan-only at this point. But Toshiba sells the SDP93S in the US, which is essentially the same player minus the TV tuner (the tuner is useless outside Japan and Brazil anyway). And Americans have to pay a lot less for their player.

Japanese buyers will be set back a whopping $520, while the SDP93S costs just $180 at Amazon. The Japanese version is also equipped with an analogue TV tuner and supports SD/SDHC/microSD/micro SDHC cards but apart from these features (the American version supports SD cards only), it seems to be the same model: a swiveling 9-inch TFT LCD screen with 800×480 resolution, DivX support, JPEG viewer, virtual surround sound and built-in speakers.

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

The aquarium is a part of the Ocean Expo Commemorative National Government Park located in Motobu, Okinawa. The main tank called the 'Kuroshio Sea' holds 7,500-cubic meters (1,981,290 gallons) of water and features the world's second largest acrylic glass panel, measuring 8.2 meters by 22.5 meters with a thickness of 60 centimeters. Whale sharks and manta rays are kept amongst many other fish species in the main tank.

On 16 June 2007 at 10:25 PM a manta ray was born at the aquarium after a gestation of 374 days

The aquarium is one of very few that keep whale sharks in captivity, and is currently trying to breed them.

Taking a page from the Baby Translator invented by Homer Simpson’s half-brother Herb Powell, the $100 “Why Cry Baby Analyzer” attempts to help parents figure out what their wailing bundle of joy is so upset about. While not as accurate as the Baby Translator from the Simpsons (”I have soiled myself… how embarrassing”) the WCBA can apparently detect the following dispositions: hungry, bored, annoyed, sleepy, and stressed.

So does it work? Who knows? One thing’s for sure, though, only the “hungry” setting really necessitates any serious action. If I were a parent, I’d be a bit put off by a “bored” reading.

Oh, you’re bored? You sit around and consume resources all day without recontributing to the family’s economic bottom line. Shall I turn on the Teletubbies for you? High definition or standard?

Oh my, you’re annoyed? I’ll try to be more quiet when getting ready in the morning. You’ve got a long day of crapping your pants and sleeping, after all. My apologies!

Samsung four new digital cameras

Samsung just dropped four new digital cameras: HZ10W, TL100, SL102 and SL420.

The HZ10W is a 10.2-megapixel shooter with a 24mm ultra-wide Schneider lens and 10x optical zoom. There’s both optical and digital image stabilization. And it shoots 720p video at 30fps with the usual H.264 compression. Look for it this month with a $300 price tag.

The TL100 is thin at 16.6mm and features a 2.7-inch LCD, 3x optical zoom and a brushed stainless steel body. The 12.2-megapixel shooter features Smart Auto, which automagically selects the best scene mode based on the environment you’re in. Crazy. This puppy won’t be coming out till the Spring.

Rounding out the new cameras are the SL102 and SL420. Both feature 10.2-megapixel sensors, face detection and rechargeable Li-ion. The 102 comes packed with a 2.5-inch LCD, Dual Image Stabilization, 3x optical zoom and records MJPEG/VGA video. The 420 has a 2.7-inch LCD and shoots MPEG4/SVGA video. Both the 102 and 420 will make a Spring time appearance.

Pentax upgrades the W-series with Optio W80

I’ve always said that the W-series from Pentax should be the only point and shoot in their lineup, but I, apparently, know nothing of marketing and business strategy.

Today marks the arrival of the optio W80. It’s not only waterproof, but now it’s shockproof, dustproof and coldproof. Dunk it under 16-feet of under, drop it from 3.3-feet high or subject it to sub-freezing temps (14 degrees Fahrenheit) and the W80 will keep on kickin’.

Armed with a 12.1-megapixel sensor, the 5x internal optical zoom shooter features a wide-angle 28mm lens, a 2.5-inch LCD and HD (720p) video recording at 30fps.

The W80 drops into stores next month for $300 in Cardinal Red, Azure Blue and Gunmetal Gray.

For Samsung Electronics and LG Display, selling their latest panel technologies to potential clients is their top concern amid the globally booming flat screen industry.

They aim to steal the limelight at a leading North American show for electronic-displays in Los Angeles by introducing their newest products, which the companies claim are the world’s first, even though experts doubt their marketability.

On Sunday, Samsung Electronics showcased an ultra-high definition 82-inch liquid crystal display (LCD) panel for 120Hz television sets at the Society for Information Display (SID) 2008 International Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition in the U.S. city. The show will run from May 18 to 23.

The world’s largest LCD panel supplier said the latest product offers much clearer viewing as its 120Hz technology, which displays an image 120 times per second, increases the frame time by twice that of the existing technology.

Meanwhile, Samsung said the panel uses a light-emitting diode (LED) backlight, with the increasing popularity of LED-backed flat screens triggering soaring demand worldwide.

Industry experts said that so far backlight module makers around the world have yet to effectively improve defect rates in making light-guide plates and assembling LED backlight modules. As a result, the price of LED backlight modules remains far higher than that of the current cold cathode fluorescent lamp model.

``I personally hope the next-generation ultra-high definition level in the LCD panel market will open soon, with increasing consumer demand for clear viewing in households and public spaces,’’ Kim Sang-soo, executive vice president of Samsung’s LCD Technology Center, said. Samsung also exhibited an 82-inch LCD e-Board using ultra-high definition technology.

At the show, LG Display, the world’s No. 2 LCD panel manufacturer, is exhibiting an LCD roll-printing technology to replace the photolithography process used in LCD fabrication.

The environmentally friendly roll-printing technology is capable of reducing the amount of chemicals required by the photolithography process and can be easily applied to the fabrication of next-generation flexible displays.

``This show gives us a chance to find more clients and we are planning to boost marketing in our showrooms,’’ its chief technology officer Chung In-jae said.

Samsung SDI, the first mass producer of organic light-emitting diode display panels using an advanced active-matrix method, will release 15 such panels ranging from 2-inch to 31-inch.

The company is planning to introduce an e-business card equipped with a 3.0-inch WVGA AM OLED panel and is also set to show off an e-passport adopting a 2-inch QVGA AM OLED panel.

``As AM OLED panels have reached economies of scale thanks to increasing production yields, we are positive about getting more calls for our products,’’ Seo Hae-su, a company spokesperson, said.

LEGO Battles for the Nintendo DS

I don’t get a bonerd for LEGOs like some people I know whose names start with a J and end with an S and work for a site that rhymes with shmimono, but I have fond memories of spending countless hours as a youth erecting LEGO fortresses and castles and whatever else my imagination could conjure up. It was always about smashing the other fortress and kicking some tiny LEGO ass, but that was at least 20 years ago. Now fast forward to 2009 and while I still like to kick ass, I enjoy doing it on a much smaller scale. Enter LEGO Battles for the Nintendo DS.

If you’re a hardcore RTS gamer then Battles isn’t really for you, but it’s still fun to see tiny LEGO pirates, knights and moon men duke it out on the small screen. However, the charm dissipates rather quickly into story mode one of six. Think of Battles as an introductory course to real time strategy games. I hate RTS, but found LEGO Battles to be amusing and worth the time to review.

The cut scenes are fairly amusing and I have to say that the tiny actors portraying LEGO characters are hilarious, which made me laugh out loud. Multiplayer is about as good as your chosen opponent allows. In other words, find someone who is good at RTS and multiplayer can be pretty sweet on Battles. Another highlight is the free play mode where you can mix and match troops from the Space, Pirates and Castle series to do your bidding.

LEGO Battles isn’t perfect, though. With such a small screen on the DS (and even DSi), trying to control your troops when there’s so much going on can be a challenge. The artificial intelligence is pretty dumb and I spent a few minutes cursing them out when they decided to get lost or stop doing their jobs. Can you imagine a grown man yelling at a video game on a packed plane? Yeah, that was me over the weekend.

I enjoyed Battles but it’s not for everyone. Seasoned RTS gamers will want to pass unless they plan on handing it down to junior RTS nerds in the making. If anything, LEGO titles like Battles are much better than the licensed titles that involve non-LEGO characters like Batman. Just saying.

Samsung announces the solar-powered Crest Solar E1107

By common definition, the new Samsung Crest Solar is about as far from a smartphone as you can get - but if you’re going somewhere where electric outlets are scarce, it’s probably a smart idea to carry one.

Available later this month in India, Europe, Southeast Asia, Southwest Asia, and Latin America, the Crest Solar will be Samsung’s first solar-powered cell phone to reach the market. For every hour of rays this guy catches, it walks away with 5-10 minutes of talk time.

Beyond being the first Samsung to come packed with solar-panels, it seems they’re also using it as a testing ground for a few things on the software end. “Mobile Tracker” sends out an alert when the SIM in the phone has been swapped and “sends out an SOS message in an emergency” (though we’re not quite sure what that entails), while “Fake Call” lets you get out of that blind-date-gone-wrong without hurting any feelings. A few other features are also sneaking in on a locational basis, such as a bicyclist-friendly profile which blocks calls outside of those important enough to answer while riding, or a prayer-reminder alert system. No word yet on pricing.

New iPhone 3GS may cost $399, $499 for customers who are mid-contract

Existing AT&T iPhone customers who are in the middle of their two-year contract with AT&T and want to upgrade to the new iPhone 3GS may have to pay $200 more for the phone, and some of them have taken to Twitter to protest the price difference.

The new phone, which goes on sale June 19, will cost new and "qualifying" customers $199 for the 16-gigabyte version and $299 for the 32 GB mode, says AT&T, the exclusive carrier of the popular smartphone in the United States.

Surprised and angry AT&T customers have been venting on Twitter, the microblogging Web site where, as of this morning, nearly 4,000 of them signed a "Twitition," a Twitter petition protesting the pricing.

This title maybe misleading but the intention is pretty peaceful! Legend has it that after the World War II got over, American pilot Gale Halvorson airdropped candies in the name of hope, for the Berlin children. War equals devastation, so dropping candies instead of bombs was probably personal retribution. Inspired by this incident, designer Hwang Jin wook and pals have come up with a plan to combat deforestation and desertification of land in a similar fashion. Their mission is called “Seedbomb.”

Mission Seedbomb involves a bomber aircraft and charges full of the Seed Capsules. Essentially the project involves artificial dispersal of seeds over arid areas where natural vegetation has lapsed due to man-made follies like deforestation leading to desertification. Each capsule contains artificial soil and seeds, and are air-dropped over the selected regions.

Housed in biodegradable plastic, the artificial soil provides nourishment and moisture to the seed; till it grows out to be a strong enough plant to sustain itself. As the sapling matures, the plastic capsule melts away, leaving behind a brand new generation.

Sounds like Mission (im)Possible to me, however the logistics of desert environment and the kind of seeds to be dispersed will require a lot research and expertise from the botanists. Because once the capsule melts away and the artificial soil’s nourishment and moisture used up, it’ll take a lot of effort on the plant’s part to survive the harsh environment.

For some startups, there is life after the deadpool. Take Wallop, a social-network-turned-social-app company that dove under in September, only to now arise again as Coveroo. Wallop still had some money from the $13 million it raised in 2005 and 2006, but its business wasn’t working. It’s original idea was to sell virtual “self expression” items through its own social network. It ended up creating animated greeting card and party invite apps for Facebook. Rest in peace.

CEO Karl Jacob isn’t giving up, though. He is just moving in a different direction, away from virtual goods and towards customizing real consumer devices. Using mostly its stock, Wallop acquired Etchstar, a custom engraver that specializes in laptops, iPods, and cell phones. And now it is relaunching as Coveroo, which is making it even easier to personalize your digital devices. All you do is order a back cover to your existing cell phone, pick a design, and they send it to you.

If you want to pimp your cell phone cover this Christmas, check out the designs at Coveroo. What is OLED? OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode. The "organic" in OLED refers to organic material. Carbon is the basis of all organic matter. Examples of carbon-based substances include sugar, wood and the majority of plastics. The "LED" stands for "Light Emitting Diode" and describes the process of converting electric energy into light. There are two types of OLED – small molecule OLED and polymer OLED. Sony uses the small molecule type because it has a longer lifespan.

How does OLED work? A Layer of organic material is sandwiched between two conductors (an anode and a cathode), which in turn are sandwiched between a glass top plate (seal) and a glass bottom plate (substrate). When electric Current is applied to the two conductors, a bright, electro-luminescent light is produced directly from the organic material.

How is color created? : OLED has more control over color expression because it only expresses pure colors when an electric Current stimulates the relevant Pixels. The OLED primary color matrix is arranged in red, green, and blue Pixels, which are mounted directly to a printed circuit board. Each individual OLED element is housed in a special "micro-cavity" structure designed to greatly reduce ambient light interference that also works to improve overall color Contrast.

The thickness of the organic Layer is adjusted to produce the strongest light for each of the colors – red, green and blue - used to render the color picture. The three colors are further refined by a color filter, which purifies each color without the need for a polarizer, rendering outstanding color purity.

What’s next for OLED? Sony established a milestone with the introduction of the industry’s first Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) television, the XEL-1. This 11" diagonal desktop color television is just the first step Sony is taking in the world of OLED televisions. Larger screen sizes and higher native resolutions are possible. As substrates get thinner, the displays will in turn get thinner.
